Ran new coax in a 1920s house in Tulsa and the signal went from unusable to full bars in one afternoon
Went out to a place near Cherry Street last Tuesday where the customer could only get about half the channels and they kept cutting out when it rained. Turns out the old line was RG-59 stapled to the floor joists back in the 80s and half the shield was chewed up from a previous rodent issue. Swapped it for RG-6, added a proper ground block at the box, and the modem locked on at full speed within two minutes of powering back up. The guy acted like I'd done brain surgery, but it was just old cable doing old cable things. What's your go-to move when a customer swears it's the provider's fault and it's really just a 40 year old line?
It really is funny how fast they change their tune once the picture comes back, huh? Been on plenty of those calls where the customer is ready to switch to another provider and it turns out the line has been shot since Reagan was in office. Honestly it's hard to blame them sometimes, since nobody tells them the wire on the side of their house has a shelf life. You did the right thing swapping to RG-6 and grounding it proper, that rodent damage alone was probably killing them every time it got wet out. Half the time people just want somebody to believe them when they say it's broken, and you actually showed up and fixed it.
