Hand sanding vs. the ROS debate, my client in Denver forced the issue

Last week I finished a white oak kitchen and skipped the random orbital sander on the face frames, hand sanded everything to 180 like my old boss taught me, and the finish came out flawless. But my buddy says I wasted 6 hours on a job where a powered sander would've looked the same, so which side are you on for exposed wood, smoothness or speed?
