PSA: my 2 gallon bowl on the kitchen sill did better with no filter, and the guy at the shop in Lynnwood said I was cruel
Three months ago I moved my betta from a filtered 5 gallon to a plain 2 gallon bowl on the kitchen sill with a pothos cutting hanging in it, and he colored up more in 2 weeks than he did all last winter. The guy at the fish shop in Lynnwood told me I was being cruel and that any bowl under 5 gallons is a death trap, but my nitrates stay under 10 with twice a week water changes and the plant does the rest. Am I crazy for thinking a small planted bowl with a lid can beat a big tank with a filter for one fish?
Any bowl under 5 gallons is a death trap" is the kind of line that sells tanks, not keeps fish. Your betta colored up because he's warm, the pothos is eating his waste, and he's not fighting a current all day. Twice a week changes on two gallons is maybe ten minutes of your life, and nitrates under 10 backs that up. The guy in Lynnwood sells filters, so of course the answer is a bigger filter.
