Overheard someone say budgeting is just 'being cheap with extra steps' and it got me thinking

I was at a coffee shop near my office in Austin last Tuesday and this guy at the next table laughed and said his friend's budgeting was just 'being cheap with extra steps' (like it was a bad thing or something). It kind of stung because I've been tracking every dollar for 6 months now and it's helped me save $340 for an emergency fund that I never had before. How do you deal with people who think budgeting means you're just a miser?

Budgeting's just being honest with your money, not cheap.

I read somewhere that money is just a tool, not a reflection of your worth, and I think that ties right into what you're saying. "Being honest with your money" really hits home for me. Like, I used to think budgeting meant I couldn't buy the stuff I wanted, like a new game or takeout. But really it's about looking at where my cash actually goes each month and being real about it. I heard a guy on a podcast say most people don't know what they spend on coffee or snacks until they track it, and that little stuff adds up fast. It's not about being cheap, it's just about not fooling yourself.
