Overheard a guy at the airport say you should always book the cheapest flight, no matter the time
He was telling his friend to just pick the absolute lowest fare, even if it lands at 3 AM. I think that's a bad hack because a $20 saved flight can cost you $60 in extra airport transit or a sketchy overnight wait. Has anyone else found a better rule for picking flight times without blowing the budget?

I used to always grab the cheapest flight too. Then I took a 5 AM budget flight to Denver and had to pay $80 for a taxi because the train wasn't running yet. That wiped out the savings and left me exhausted. Now I check airport transit hours and add that cost before I book. A midday flight that's $30 more often ends up being cheaper overall.

My first trip to Vegas I booked a 6 AM flight to save fifty bucks. Ended up spending over sixty on an Uber because the buses weren't running that early. I totally get it now. The real cost isn't just the ticket price. You have to add in all the extra stuff like transport and your own time. I do the same math now before clicking book.
