My ice maker died on a hot Saturday

Last weekend the ice maker in my Whirlpool fridge just stopped making ice completely, right before we had the whole family over for a barbecue. Turns out the water line filter was completely clogged after I skipped changing it for about 8 months. Anyone else had this happen and found a cheap fix besides just swapping the filter?

Did you try flushing the water line through before swapping the filter? I've had luck pulling the filter out and running a couple gallons through the dispenser to clear the gunk out before putting a new one in. Might save you a trip to the store if yours is just clogged up and not completely shot.

See I've actually had the complete opposite experience with that. Every time I tried flushing without a filter the water just came out with this rusty brown gunk that clogged up my whole dispenser line. Ended up having to replace the tubing inside the fridge door because the sediment got so bad in there. A fresh filter actually catches that junk before it gets into your system. Plus most manufacturers say running the water without a filter can mess up the flow regulator if you do it too long. I'd rather spend the $35 on a new filter than risk damaging the whole unit.
