Our book club meeting got derailed by a single footnote in chapter 7

We were supposed to debate the main character's choice in 'The Midnight Library' but someone noticed a footnote on page 142 that referenced a real neuroscience study from 2019. It completely split the group... half of us thought the author was making a point about regret, the other half argued it was just a throwaway fact. Has anyone else had a tiny detail in a book completely change your whole discussion?

Sometimes a footnote is just a footnote and readers see meaning where none exists.

The footnote changes everything actually. The author didn't just throw in a random fact for fun. That 2019 study directly ties to the main character's whole crisis about the paths not taken. If half your group missed that connection, they're reading the book wrong. The neuroscience stuff proves regret isn't just emotion, its literally your brain chemistry misfiring. Your book club should have started over from that footnote instead of ignoring it. Sounds like you wasted a meeting arguing about nothing.
