Certification class in Tulsa changed how I read weld prints

Everyone raves about the new digital weld inspection tools, but I just finished a 2 week cert course in Tulsa and the old paper methods hit different. We spent 4 days on blueprint symbols nobody bothers with anymore, and now I catch fit-up errors before the torch even lights. The instructor kept saying 'the tool tells you what's there, the print tells you what's supposed to be.' My foreman thinks I'm crazy for double checking his layout against the original spec. Has anyone else gone back to basics after a refresher, or am I the only one who finds the old ways faster?
