Remember when teaching a game meant passing around a dog-eared rulebook?

Now we just watch a tutorial. Part of me misses the collective confusion and eventual triumph.

Missing the 'collective confusion' is a bit dramatic, lol, it's just learning a game.

Learning mahjong with my group last winter, @ruby_lane, showed me that collective confusion is real. It's not just individual struggle, it's a shared experience that bonds players. Dismissing it overlooks how games build community.

What if you intentionally left the tutorial for later and started with the physical components? That way, the group puzzles through the basics together, using the rulebook as a reference rather than a script. You preserve that bonding moment of discovery while still having a clear path forward if you get truly stuck.
