A guy at the Denver game cafe told me my teaching style was a mess

I was trying to explain Root to a new group last month and just kept talking for 20 minutes straight. He stopped me and said, 'You're giving them the rulebook, not the game.' I started with just one faction now... how do you keep a teach under 10 minutes?

Man, that guy at the cafe was totally right, even if it stung a bit. Starting with just one faction is the only way to go with Root. You gotta just set up the cats, show how they move and build, and get people hitting each other right away. All the other weird rules come out when someone picks a different faction on their turn. The goal is to get them playing, not to explain every possible thing that could happen. It feels wrong to leave so much out, but it works.
