Gaps between frame and mat drive me up a wall, am I the only one?

Everyone keeps posting those floating frame setups with the mat cut too small, so you can see a white gap around the print... I hung a $12 poster from Ikea last week and fixed it with a cardboard shim behind the mat, took 10 minutes and looks clean. Why is the standard advice to just trim or center it when a cheap spacer solves the whole look?
