Soaking my anvil face in coolant was a mistake for like 4 years

I had this older anvil where the face kept showing these tiny hairline cracks after hard sessions. I thought quenching right after forging was helping it cool evenly, but someone from a shop in Ohio pointed out that dropping the surface temp that fast actually made the steel want to pull apart. I stopped doing it and switched to air cooling between heats, and the problem just vanished. Anyone else run into the same trap with an older face?
