Chain wear gauges, are they worth it or just a sales pitch?
I've been in shops where a new $12 gauge says a chain is done at 0.75, but a $150 caliper from Park Tool shows it barely at 0.5, so which one do you trust when a customer's cassette is clearly fine? My last shop lost a repeat customer over this because we swapped a drivetrain they didn't need, but the other mechanic swears the gauge saves him from comebacks on shifting issues. Do you guys rely on the cheap tools or measure with a ruler or caliper every time, and has anyone actually seen a canned answer work out both ways?
