PSA: I let my debit card sit in my wallet for two weeks and got hit with a $34 overdraft on a $6 coffee
Last month I was on a work trip in Cincinnati and I paid for everything with my credit card out of habit, so my debit card just sat there. When I finally got home and checked my bank app, I saw a $34 overdraft fee because a $6 coffee I bought at the airport had posted days later and dragged my balance below zero. I had about $200 in my checking account and figured I was fine, but I never thought about the lag between swiping and the charge actually hitting. What tipped me off was a text alert I signed up for months ago that I always ignored, and this time it showed the fee before I even knew the coffee had cleared. I called the bank and they reversed it once as a courtesy, but the guy on the phone told me this happens constantly with small debit purchases. Now I move money into checking the day before I know anything is posting, and I turned on low balance alerts at $100 instead of $20. Has anyone else gotten dinged by a tiny charge that posted way later than you expected?
