Serious question, the old guy on the next balcony over in Queens showed me his string trellis trick and it stuck with me
I live in an apartment building in Queens and my balcony faces the one next door, so I see the same neighbor out there most mornings. Last June he noticed me fighting with a floppy tomato plant in a 5 gallon bucket and he leaned over and showed me how he runs twine from a hook on the wall down to the pot rim, then just wraps the stem loose in a figure 8 as it grows. He did it with his own hands to show me, no fuss, and he told me he has been growing tomatoes on that balcony for 11 years and never uses cages because they take up too much room. I tried it the next day with a $3 roll of jute twine and a hook I screwed into the brick, and my plant stood up straight through the whole summer. What got me was that he did not lecture me, he just did it and waved and went back to his watering can. Now every time my twine needs adjusting I think about that little hook. For folks on small balconies, do you anchor your plants to the wall or railing, and how do you keep it from looking like a mess?
