My friend in Portland said she never checks her oven temperature with a thermometer

She just trusts the dial, but after my last batch of rock-hard scones, I got curious. I bought a $12 oven thermometer from the hardware store and found my oven runs 25 degrees hot. Has anyone else discovered a big gap between the set temperature and the real one?

Remember my neighbor who kept burning her pies? She swore it was the recipe until she finally checked. Her oven was running almost 40 degrees hotter than the dial said. How can you trust a dial after something like that?
