Took me 3 weekends to fix 1 sagging gate hinge and I want to tell someone who gets it
So back in April I noticed my side gate was dragging on the concrete every time we opened it. The latch would not line up at all, you had to lift the whole thing with your shoulder to get it closed. I figured it was a 30 minute job, pop out the old screws, fill the holes, put in some longer ones, done. First try the screws just spun in the wood because the posts were soft from rain, so I squirted in wood glue and jammed in golf tees from my garage bucket and waited a full day. Second try the gate sagged again by dinner because it turns out my top hinge was mounted 2 inches too low, which I only caught after googling why gates sag and reading a fencing forum thread from 2011. I finally bought a $9 turnbuckle kit from the hardware store on Piedmont Ave and ran a diagonal cable from the bottom hinge corner up to the top of the post. That was the trick, it pulled the whole frame square in about 20 minutes. Three weekends and like $14 in parts to learn the hinges were never the real problem at all. Now the gate swings with one finger. Anyone else ever get beat by a sagging gate, and did a brace fix it or did you end up rebuilding the whole frame?
