Neighbor in Tucson swore his 3 inch gravel base would hold my shed, and now my lawn has a sinkhole
Two years ago my neighbor Rick in Tucson talked me into skipping the concrete pad for my 10x12 shed and using 3 inches of gravel instead, since he did it that way and "it never moved once." Fast forward to last month and the back corner sank about 4 inches after a monsoon, so now the door catches on the frame and I have to shove it with my shoulder. I pulled up the gravel and found the ground under it was mostly loose fill dirt, which Rick never mentioned because his yard sits on hard caliche. Cost me $180 in new gravel plus a whole Saturday to dig it out and pack it down again. Anybody else get burned by a neighbor's advice that only worked because of their specific soil?
