My paver patio turned into a swamp after one heavy storm

In June I laid 400 square feet of pavers over compacted gravel thinking that was enough. After a 2 inch downpour last week, the center section sank about 3 inches and water pooled for two days. Turns out I skipped the proper base layer of 4 inches of crushed stone and the ground underneath just gave way. Has anyone else had to tear up and redo a patio base after the first real rain?
