My DIY cedar planter box turned into a squirrel hotel overnight

Built a nice 4 foot cedar planter for tomatoes last Saturday in Cleveland. Woke up Sunday and found a family of squirrels had chewed through the bottom and made a nest in the soil. They even brought in acorns and a sock. I learned to line the base with hardware cloth before filling it with dirt. Anyone else had wildlife take over their garden setup before the first plant even went in?
