Had a neighbor help me trench for a French drain last summer

I was digging a 30-foot trench by hand near my shed and this older guy, Mike, walked over with a rented trencher. He said he saw me struggling for two days and couldn't watch anymore. We finished the whole thing in about 3 hours and he showed me how to slope the pipe just right. Turns out he used to do landscaping for 20 years before retiring. Has anyone else had a random neighbor just save your project like that?

I read somewhere that most people who do this kind of thing are retired trades guys who just miss having something useful to do lol. My old neighbor Frank was a retired electrician and he saw me trying to wire up a new shed light with lamp cord and wire nuts. He just shook his head and came over with a roll of proper 12 gauge and a box of junction boxes the next morning. We had it done in under an hour and it actually passed inspection because of him. Those old dudes have forgotten more about this stuff than most of us will ever learn.

And Frank probably saved you from burning your shed down too, which is the real gift. My dad was a plumber for 40 years and he still can't walk past a drippy faucet without grabbing his tools. It's almost like a muscle memory thing, they see a problem and their hands just know what to do. The younger guys might have all the new code books memorized but they don't have that sixth sense for what's actually going to hold up for 20 years.
