Guy at the Sacramento ReStore asked why I fixed my raised bed wrong, and now I can't sleep

I ran into a retired carpenter at the Sacramento ReStore on Saturday while buying cedar 2x6s for a raised bed, and he asked why I was lining the bottom with landscape fabric instead of hardware cloth. He said voles chewed through his fabric in 2 weeks and tunneled up into his carrots, and I had never even thought about it since my old place was on a slab. Has anyone here dealt with voles and did switching to hardware cloth actually solve it for you?
