Am I the only one who just learned a raised bed needs 18 inches of soil depth, not 8?

I was about to build four beds at 8 inches deep when my neighbor Carl in Boise showed me a state ag extension PDF that says 18 inches minimum for carrots and tomatoes, and now I need to redo my whole lumber order.
