Warning about a sudden change in your hens' combs

Two of my Barred Rocks went from bright red combs to pale and shriveled in under 48 hours. The vet said it was a sign of serious dehydration, which we traced back to their waterer's nipple getting clogged with algae. Has anyone else had a water system fail that fast?

Switched to a hanging bucket system, no more clogs.

Hanging buckets are not some magic fix. @jessicab33 got lucky, but they can tip over or grow the same algae if not cleaned. The real problem is just not checking the water daily. Any system can fail, nipples or buckets. Blaming the equipment is an easy excuse. You have to physically look at the water source every single day, no way around it.
