Heard a guy at the feed store say chickens don't need heat lamps past 8 weeks, and my electric bill just proved him right
I was picking up a bag of layer crumbles in Kent a couple weeks ago and this older guy in line was talking about how he hasn't used a heat lamp on his girls past 8 weeks in 15 years. I figured he was just set in his ways, but my electric bill came in at $47 less than the month before, and that's with the same 6 hens. So I unplugged the lamp for good and just made sure they had deep bedding and a draft free coop. They've been fine, even on that night it hit 28 degrees. My barred rocks and easter eggers didn't act any different at all. Am I crazy for waiting this long, or is this just one of those things people keep doing out of habit?
