Fought a fence post hole in solid clay for 4 hours when the auger should've taken 20 minutes

Finally gave up on the power auger and hand dug it after realizing the clay down at my place in Modesto turns into something closer to brick once you get past 18 inches, so now I'm wondering, does anybody actually rent a mini excavator for a job this small or do you all just suffer through it?
