Built my raised beds 4 inches too low for 2 summers and my back finally snitched on me
For two full summers I had my raised beds sitting at about 8 inches off the ground. I kept telling myself it was fine, I would just kneel in the dirt and lean over like everyone does. Last month my neighbor waved me over to his setup and all his boxes came up to his waist. I stood next to mine and literally had to bend at a 90 degree angle just to touch the soil. That is when it hit me, I was killing my lower back for no reason at all. I grabbed 6 more cedar boards and brought everything up to 30 inches and mulched around it. Now my back does not hurt after watering and I can drink my coffee standing up while I check the tomatoes. Did anyone else build low first and regret it, or am I the only one who skipped the ergonomics part?
