Vent: Phone maps left me stranded until I dug out my paper one

I was halfway up a ridge in the Sawtooths when my hiking app just quit, lol. No service meant I couldn't reload it or call for help. I had a crumpled topo map in my pack that I almost didn't bring. Using the contour lines, I figured out a way down to a river I couldn't see from the trail. That river led me to a forest road and back to my car by dark. Honestly, if you only use your phone, you're asking for trouble in the wild. Always pack a real map, it's that simple, lmao.

Offline maps are a good idea, but they're not always reliable. Phones can freeze or crash, and GPS might not work deep in a valley. A paper map just sits there, ready to use without any fuss. I always bring both because tech fails when you least expect it.

My buddy's offline maps failed too, @the_ivan.

Sure, having a backup is smart, but isn't this kinda overblown? Most phones have offline maps now, and you can download areas ahead of time. Plus, batteries die or whatever, but that's why you bring a power bank. It's not like paper maps are some magic fix, they can get wet or lost too. Just seems like common sense to have multiple options, not just one or the other.
