Switched from hiking poles to a single stick after a trip in Vermont last fall
I used to carry two adjustable poles on every trip and figured that was just how it was done. On a muddy section of the Long Trail near Killington last October, a guy passing me said one taller stick worked better for him on steep ground because he could switch hands and plant it downhill. I tried it on my next hike with a plain ash stick I cut myself, and my knees felt better on the descents. Now I leave the poles home on anything under 10 miles. Anyone else go the other way and find two poles worth the weight?
Tried the same thing after tweaking my shoulder last spring, one stick just made more sense. Still bring both poles for big mile days with a pack though, the extra support on tired legs is worth it. For day hikes the single stick wins every time lol.
