I spent 18 months sending cold emails that went nowhere until my cousin read one out loud to me
I run a small commercial concrete business out of Tulsa and last year I decided I needed to go after bigger B2B contracts, so I bought a list of 4,000 facility managers and started sending cold emails every Tuesday like clockwork. For 18 months I got almost nothing back, maybe 3 replies per thousand emails, and I kept blaming the list and the subject lines. Then my cousin who sells software asked if he could read one of my emails out loud to me, and about 10 seconds in I wanted to crawl under the table because it was all about my company, my crew size, my 20 years of experience, my certifications. Not one word about the guy getting it, not one mention of his loading dock or his parking lot, just me talking about myself like a bad first date. I rewrote everything to lead with the problem I could see from the street, like cracking in their dock apron or faded line striping, and replies went from 3 per thousand to 11 per thousand in 6 weeks. The thing that bugs me is how obvious it was once someone just read it back to me. What is the dumbest thing you kept doing for way too long because you never stopped to check yourself?
