Dropped $120 on that fancy serpentine belt tool and honestly it wasn't worth it
I bought that Lisle belt tool everyone raves about last month thinking it would save me time. Tbh my old wrench and a breaker bar do the same job just fine for most cars. The tool slipped on a Chevy 5.3 and I ended up scratching my knuckles anyway. Anyone else find those specialized tools overhyped for basic belt jobs?

Those specialty tools are rarely worth the hype for simple belt jobs. Most of them just complicate something that's already straightforward with basic hand tools. A good set of wrenches and some patience usually gets it done.

That old Popular Mechanics article I read a while back actually tested this on a few common vehicles and found the specialty tools saved maybe 10 minutes max on average. The real trick was just getting the right tension the first time without having to go back and adjust anything. So yeah, unless you're doing belt jobs every weekend, save your money and just keep a breaker bar handy if something's stuck.
