Warning: I almost skipped the $220 weld-through primer, here is why I was wrong
I used to think weld-through primer was a waste of cash and just sprayed regular primer after grinding. Last month I did a quarter panel on a 2014 Silverado and the welds on the pinch seam started flashing rust in 9 days, right here in humid Houston. So I dropped $220 on a proper weld-through primer and did the other side of the same truck. Six months later that side is still clean, no bleed-through, no bubbles under the paint. What changed my mind was pulling the panel back off the rusty side and seeing how far the rust crept under the seam sealer. I was wrong and the extra money is worth it on any seam you can't get to later. Does anybody here have a brand they trust, or do you just rattle can it and hope?
$220 to learn rust doesn't care about your feelings is still cheaper than redoing a whole paint job twice. Rattle can works if you actually let it flash off right, but the good stuff in a tube is worth it for pinch seams.
