Showerthought: my trowel snapped clean in half on a 400 year old midden and I just stood there
So I was out at a site about 40 minutes outside Tucson doing a surface survey on a midden that looked super promising, and about 20 minutes in my trowel just snapped clean in half right where the blade meets the handle. No warning, no bending first, just a clean break. It was the one I got for like 18 bucks at a field school sale back in 2019, so I guess it owed me nothing, but the timing could not have been worse because I had just started exposing what looked like a decent lithic scatter. I ended up finishing the whole square with a butter knife from my lunch bag and a paintbrush, which took probably twice as long. The worst part is I had a backup trowel sitting in my truck the entire time and forgot it existed until I was packing up. Anyone got a trowel brand that actually survives Arizona caliche, or am I just doomed to buy a new one every season?
