My grid mapping was off by 20 cm for a whole season

I spent 3 months digging test pits in Vermont and kept finding artifacts clustered in weird spots that made no sense. Turned out I was setting my datum point from a tree stump that had shifted over winter, so every square I mapped was skewed. A retired surveyor walked by and asked why my north arrow pointed at a rock, and it clicked. Has anyone else had a setup error that threw off their whole grid?
