Am I the only one who skips the museum gift shop and asks the front desk for the site map instead?

After striking out at three gift shops in Rome last week looking for a real guide to the Forum, I asked the front desk lady where the actual excavation reports were kept and she handed me a free 40 page booklet the tourists never see.
