Had a homeowner in Portland ask me to 'just top it' on a 60 foot maple. He said 'It's my tree, I can do what I want with it, right?'

Technically it's his tree, but topping a maple that big is a great way to kill it. Most cities have tree protection laws too.

Check the local rules because it's not always his tree. Many places have heritage tree laws that protect big old maples like that. Topping it would definitely break those rules and wreck the tree.
