Unpopular opinion: the 'no smell' compost bin at my sister's place in Austin is proof most apartment composters are fooling themselves
I stayed at my sister's apartment in Austin two weeks ago and she showed me this sealed bokashi bin she keeps under the sink. She tosses meat, cheese, and fish scraps in there, buries it all in bran, and it smells like sour pickles instead of rotting trash. My own countertop bin back home gets gross in about six days no matter how much I balance the greens and browns. I think most of us are just pretending our fruit fly situation is under control when the truth is we are feeding a whole ecosystem. Anyone here actually made the switch to bokashi, or do you all think the bran cost is not worth it?
Bokashi is legit but people act like it's magic and skip the part where you still have to bury the stuff or it turns into a fruit fly nightclub anyway. The bran does add up, maybe ten bucks a month if you buy the decent kind, so it's really a question of whether you hate the smell more than you hate spending money. Six days before things go south sounds about right for a normal countertop setup unless you're freezing scraps or emptying it twice a week. Your sister in Austin is probably just better at keeping up with it than the rest of us, not smarter.
