I was flipping through a coin price guide at my library in Boise last week and saw that a 1965 quarter is 90 percent silver, worth about $4.50 right now just in metal. I always thought 1965 coins were worthless because they stopped making silver ones that year, but nope, they kept it up until 1964 for most coins. I checked my jar of laundry quarters and pulled out four of them, felt like I hit the lottery. Now I'm second guessing every yard sale bin I skipped because the dates looked boring. Should I be buying any pre-1965 quarter I see under a buck, or is that a sucker's game with worn coins?
