It took me 3 years to figure out my coin finder was lying to me, and I blame nobody but myself
I dug 47 holes in my local park in Boise over one summer chasing signals that turned out to be pull tabs and foil, and the detector was set to the wrong notch the whole time. My brother-in-law finally picked it up, flipped one switch, and got a solid copper hit on his second swing in the same dirt I'd been working for weeks. The part that stings is I kept a log of every find and never once compared the tones against a real coin I buried in my own backyard as a test. Now I bury a dime and a quarter at 6 inches before every hunt, no exceptions, and it takes about 4 minutes. What test coin setup do you all use, or do you just trust the machine out of the box?
