Found out last month I was cleaning silver finds wrong for 2 years
I used to scrub every silver coin with baking soda paste right after pulling it from the dirt. Last month a guy at the Canton flea market watched me do it and said I was stripping the patina that gives old coins their value. He showed me his 1893 Barber dime found in a Cleveland park and it still had that dark, even tone. I dug out my own finds and compared them, and my silver just looked flat and dull next to his. Now I just rinse with water and let them air dry. What do you guys do with your silver finds right out of the ground?
