My spot meter keeps lying to me in snow, what am I doing wrong?
I was shooting a bright snowy scene in the Cascades last month and every frame came out muddy gray, even though I pointed my spot meter right at the snow and closed down 2 stops like the old books say. A friend who shoots medium format told me I should meter the shadow side of a tree instead, but then my highlights blew out completely. Does anyone have a reliable trick for metering high contrast winter scenes without blowing the details?
