My old Yashica shutter jammed on a hike last Sunday
I was up at Rattlesnake Ledge trying to get a shot of the fog rolling in, and the shutter just stuck halfway. I had to pop the lens off and gently tap the curtain with a pencil to get it moving again. Has anyone else fixed a sticky shutter on the trail without proper tools?

A gentle pencil tap is risky business (you could easily knock something else out of alignment). Better to just pack a proper tools kit and accept the camera might fail in the field if you're not prepared.

A pencil tap has saved me more than once on old mechanical cameras. The trick is to use a soft graphite pencil, not a hard one, so you don't scratch anything inside. Carrying a small artist's eraser in your bag is a good backup for gentle nudges too.
