A stranger at the camera swap meet fixed my exposure problem in 30 seconds
I was at the Portland camera swap last month, maybe 9am, and this older guy watched me meter a shot three times and finally walked over. He said, 'stop trusting that meter, just read the shadows and expose for them.' I had been fighting overexposed sky shots for weeks with my Pentax K1000. So I tried it on a roll of Tri-X, just guessed at 1/125 and f/8 in full sun, and every frame came out usable. Has anyone else dumped their light meter entirely or am I just getting lucky?

Man, that guy gave you solid advice but it isn't really about dumping the meter. Sunny 16 was baked into every film box back then, so 1/125 at f/8 in full sun is just the old rule working the way it should, not luck. The meter still earns its keep indoors or in shade where your eyes can fool you.
