My neighbor's new camera setup has me shaking my head
So, I was finishing up a job down the block, and the guy next door shows me his DIY security cameras he put up last weekend. He was all proud, but the wires were just dangling, and one was even plugged into an outdoor outlet without a cover. I tried to gently say that weather could ruin it fast, and he kinda shrugged it off. It's like, more folks are doing this themselves after seeing quick videos, but they miss the basics. Now I'm worried his system will fry in the next rainstorm, and he'll blame the equipment.

Did he think the cameras come with built-in umbrellas? That setup is begging for a short circuit party in the rain.

Showing him photos of fried gear worked for me.

My Canon R5 has been through two surprise downpours on shoots. It kept working fine both times. Modern weather sealing is a lot better than people give it credit for. Sure, you shouldn't hose it down on purpose, but a bit of rain isn't an instant death sentence. I just dry it off carefully afterwards. The fear of water damage is often bigger than the real risk.
