Got schooled on a panel swap in a 1980s bank vault in Tacoma

The old system was all hardwired with a mess of 22-gauge wire, and the new panel needed a clean zone map. I spent half a day just tracing lines before the building super told me they had the original as-builts in a filing cabinet. Now I always ask for old drawings on a retrofit. Anyone else have a go-to question for a site walkthrough that saves hours?

Oh man, "half a day just tracing lines" is my entire career in a nutshell. I once spent three hours tracking a wire in a ceiling only to find it was an old phone line for a fax machine they removed in 1998. My go-to move now is asking if there's a maintenance guy who's been there since the Carter administration. Those guys know where every ghost wire is buried.

Yeah the maintenance guy trick is solid gold. I learned that after cutting what I thought was a dead cable only to hear someone yell from the next room. Now I just find the oldest person on site and ask them to point at walls while I follow. Saves so much time over trying to be the hero with a toner.
