My old crew chief told me to always torque a prop bolt twice, and I thought he was just being too careful.

He said 'the first time seats it, the second time is the real reading.' I finally saw a tech skip the second pass and the bolt backed out after 50 hours. Who else has a simple rule they swear by that others think is overkill?

Yeah, that's not overkill, that's just the job. Skipping steps to save five minutes is how you end up with a much longer day later. Saw a guy try to rush a wheel bearing once with the same logic. The 'good enough' method usually isn't. Your old chief knew what was up.

Rushing a wheel bearing? That's a special kind of crazy. Those things need to be pressed in perfectly or they'll scream like a banshee in five miles. The guy must have had a death wish for his own ears, or just loved doing the job twice. Your old chief was right, cutting corners just guarantees you'll be back under the car later. It's never just five minutes saved, it's always an hour of cussing added on.
