Overheard a coworker call GPT-4 a calculator, I get it now
Last Tuesday I was in the break room at the Des Moines facility and this guy from logistics said our new chat tool is just a fancy calculator. At first I thought he was being dismissive, but after watching him break down a routing problem with it, I realized he meant it as a compliment. It doesn't invent answers, it just does the heavy lifting on stuff you already know how to check. Has anyone else had a moment where someone reframed how you see these tools, even if they were technically wrong?

The calculator label misses the whole point in my opinion. A calculator only gives you one right answer when you punch in the numbers, but this thing can spin up fifty different ways to look at the same problem and still be wrong half the time. I watched a guy in my church group use it to plan a potluck menu for sixty people and it forgot to account for two kids with nut allergies until he caught the mistake. That's the opposite of a calculator, which never forgets anything you feed it. The logistics guy was being polite, but what he really meant is that it's a very confident intern who needs constant checking.
